Why I Started this Blog.
Welcome to Mindful Appetite! My blog finally came to life because over the past decade, I have researched and shared much of what I have discovered through my own wellness journey with my friends & friends and thought maybe more people might find this information useful. I will forever be a student, and my belief system with food and exercise is always evolving to match where I’m at in life spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally and financially lol (I will splurge on a day at the spa #selfcare).
I’ve always believed that continuing bad habits or failing to incorporate good habits or acquire new knowledge are signs of mediocrity and ultimately failure. And as much science and surgery there is, your body on the inside will always mirror your daily decisions.
Now don’t get me wrong, I was not always on a quest to living a healthy lifestyle. It took years of chronic allergies, fatigue, debilitating migraines, low self-esteem, yo-yo diets, and a large tumor in my breast (that turned out to be benign thankfully) to make me realize my body does not have to accept this as normal. Reminds me of the quote
” If you listen to your body when it whispers, you don’t have to hear it scream later.”
My body was screaming, and it was telling me to change now, or things will continue to get worse.
In addition to my own issues with my body, I kept seeing and hearing how populations are continuing to struggle with nutrition related diseases they never faced until the “Western Diet” was introduced as normal (I’ll go into detail about this in another post). But studies show that Americans spend the least amount of time in the kitchen compared to any other country in the world. We are rarely aware of where our food comes from, as long as it’s on our plate and in our bellies as fast as possible so we can move on to the next task, the ingredients are an afterthought for most. And what’s worse is exercise and evaluating our mental health are the least of our worries. You can maybe go a day without eating if you’re really busy, but 3 to 6 months or years without exercise or meditation is a reality for most of us…
If you’re still reading, great! I’m not here to bash you and tell you that you suck at life or that I’ve mastered all there is to know. But what I’ve learned over the years is that healthy can look and behave different depending on the person (genetics) and their goals. There is more than one kind of healthy. And on some days, healthy to me looks like red wine, my couch, Netflix, and a good movie with (dairy free) ice cream. Yes, social media can make healthy living look confusing or only meant for hipsters or celebrities. But like anything you accomplish in life, it takes work. And do you really value something if it comes easy?
Ok enough rambling! You can read more about me here. My hope is that Mindful Appetite will be a space where I share all the food, exercises and spiritual practices that help feed an appetite on a road to a better body internally and externally. It can be as simple as better sleep quality, walking more, eating healthier more often, and just being more mindful of how you treat your temple. Ultimately when you are operating at your highest self, you can serve the world and those closest to you best. So, if I can help encourage you, breakdown the latest fads (and explain why 95% of them suck) and discuss topics in a simplistic form that inspire you to take action, that brings me the most joy!
